Update:

Spring break season is in full swing, with students at many colleagues and universities already enjoying some down time, while those that aren’t soon will.

Traditional spring break hotspots such as California, Florida, and Texas are preparing for an influx of college students over the next two months, with excitement running high all across the country.

If you’re looking for a spring break alternative location, however, or if you’re thinking ahead to summer, you could do much worse than consider these beaches in the United States proposed by Islands, which rival some of the best there are on offer elsewhere.

The United States' best beaches

Sanibel Island, Florida

Located in the Gulf of Mexico just west of Fort Myers, the water surrounding Sanibel Island is usually crystal clear, blending into the white sand.

Many parts of the island have been transformed into a nature preserve and there are strict noise ordinance laws, which means you won’t find many students or partygoers on their spring break, or Miami DJs taking up temporary residence.

There are hiking trails and paths galore, along with boat tours and cruises to see the dolphins or watch the sunsets. The local lighthouse, which was erected in 1884, is well worth a visit.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Floating between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, Mackinac Island is also known for its beautifully clear water, as well as its stunning architecture.

As it is the only place in the United States where cars are banned, you can only reach the island by ferry, which limits visitor numbers and adds to its charm. On a clear day, you can see Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to the south and Canada’s Cockburn Island to the east.

Horseback riding, biking, and even fudge-making are common activities among visitors.

Hilo, Hawaii

Is Hawaii the most exotic American state? Most probably, for many living in the contiguous United States, so you won’t be surprised to see one of its beaches on the list.

Hilo is located on the Big Island and offers stunning views, as do most places on the Aloha State shoreline. Its picturesque black sand beaches meet crystal-clear waters, in which visitors can try snorkelling and diving, among other aquatic activities.

The town of Hilo, much quieter than Honolulu, the Hawaiian capital on the island of Oahu, is also well worth a visit, with the Lili’uokalani Gardens, the Pacific Tsunami Museum and the Hilo Farmer’s Market among the top attractions.

Islamorada, Florida

Almost halfway between Key Largo and Marathon, Islamorada is one of the standout locations in the Florida Keys. The beautiful town is surrounded by turquoise water and white beaches, which attracts snorkelers and divers from far and wide.

Check out marine life, including alligators, sea lions, sharks and parrots at The Theater of the Sea, where you can also swim with dolphins. Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is a must visit if ecological tourism is your thing.

Sapelo Island, Georgia

Found on the Atlantic Coast south of Savannah and north of Jacksonville, Florida, Sapelo Island is remote heaven. Reservations are needed to visit the island, which means it’s an excellent place to go to get away from the world, and the crowds.

While the waters may not be the exotic shade of turquoise you’ll find at some of the other beaches on the list, none match Sapelo Island for space and tranquility.

Orange Beach, Alabama

Orange Beach is only a stone’s throw from the Floridian party towns of Destin and Pensacola but has an entirely different vibe.

The water surrounding the palm-tree filled city takes on a tropical emerald shade on sunny days, just like the one you would associate with the Caribbean. Animal lovers will appreciate the Gulf Coast Zoo and dolphin cruises, while adventure fans should check out the Gulf State Park, which has hiking trails and a signature zip lines.

San Clemente, California

Situated between Los Angeles and San Diego, San Clemente has none of the hustle and bustle of the big cities. The scene coastline is a favorite with surfers, while the laid-back atmosphere, and plethora of playgrounds and picnic areas, makes it ideal for families.

The Casa Romántica, an old Spanish-style mansion, offers stunning views of the Pacific, while hiking the Ridgeline Trail will provide more photo opportunities that are impossible to pass up.

Bonita Springs, Florida

Close to both Fort Myers Beach, popular with spring breakers, and Naples, where the rich and famous often hang out, Bonita Springs is considerably more laid-back and low-key, not to mention cheaper.

Bonita Beach Park ticks all the right boxes, with clear waters, white sand and significantly fewer crowds than you’ll find elsewhere. There’s also a natural beach with no bars or restaurants at Lover’s Key State Park.

As for Bonita Springs itself, there is no shortage of coffee shops, ice cream parlors and wine bars at Riverside Park. Sporty types can try kayaking and paddle boarding on the Imperial River, while alligators, peacocks, and flamingos are among the animals on display at the Wonder Gardens.
