Franklin Fire threatens Pepperdine University and forces evacuations: Map of fire location near Malibu, CA
A fire that started Monday night near Malibu accelerated overnight pushed by Santa Ana winds has now burned over 1,800 acres and forced evacuations.
The Franklin Fire, which started in Malibu Canyon Monday night, has accelerated through the night pushed by California’s Santa Ana winds. The blaze is zero percent under control and has burned over 1,800 acres according to CalFire.
The wildfire is threatening structures across Malibu as it spreads out moving south across the Pacific Coast Highway towards the ocean. While the worst of the blaze has moved past Pepperdine University, the institution said, student continue to shelter in place.

The latest updates from the City of Malibu say that the Franklin Fire has moved into the Malibu Pier area and that structures are impacted on Malibu Knolls Rd and in Sweetwater Canyon.
Mandatory evacuations are in effect for all of Zones MAL-C112 (approximately Carbon Beach to Puerco Canyon) and MAL-C111 (approximately Tuna Creek to Carbon Beach) informed the city. Additionally, Evacuation Warning has been issued for MAL-C113 (approximately Puerco Canyon to Trancas Canyon).
Fire crews are in the area and the LA County Sheriffs are conducting evacuations door-to-door.
The evacuation center set up at Palisades Recreation Center at 851 Alma Real Dr, which is currently open, has been upgraded to accommodate small pets in carriers or crates.
There is a large animal shelter available at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, located at 6201 Winnetka Ave at Victory Blvd.
Those who are forced to evacuate can also check a list of certain hotels where Southern California Emergency is offering discount rates.
