Update:

George Conway, the lawyer and political activist, might be better known to some as the husband of Kellyanne Conway, who played a prominent role in the first Trump administration, serving as Senior Counselor to the President.

Though both are conservatives, the couple has distinct political views, which have often led to awkward moments on social media. Though Kellyanne Conway has remained more distanced from the Trump White House this time around, her husband has continued to criticize the former president, calling him a threat to democracy.

In particular, Trump’s attacks on the judiciary have Conway—a trained lawyer—deeply concerned about the country’s future. He sees it as inevitable that Trump would defy the Supreme Court, should its conservative majority rule against him.

Conway, citing a recent development in Israel—where the Supreme Court ruled that the firing of the Attorney General prosecuting the corruption case against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “invalid”—suggested the incident could have implications for the U.S.

Drawing a parallel to how the Israeli government is expected to ignore the court’s ruling, Conway warned: “Mark my words: Trump will defy our Supreme Court too. It’s just a matter of time.”

The Supreme Court and 2nd Trump adminstration

As the Trump presidency enters its seventh month, the Supreme Court has yet to rule directly against the president, but it has imposed key legal requirements on his administration. For example, the Court affirmed that due process is essential for migrants facing detention and deportation. In a recent case involving Venezuelan nationals, the justices ruled that individuals subject to removal under the Alien Enemies Act must be given proper notice and an opportunity to challenge their deportation through habeas corpus proceedings.

Upholding these rights may not seem straightforward to those who support the administration’s mass deportation policy. However, ensuring that migrants’ rights under international law—including the right to claim asylum—are respected is also critical to protecting U.S. citizens and permanent residents from being unjustly detained, whether intentionally or not. Habeas corpus rights are essential to preventing the government from detaining individuals without cause.

The Court emphasized that even non-citizens are entitled to constitutional protections, including the right to judicial review and a meaningful chance to contest their removal. These rulings underscore the judiciary’s role in ensuring that executive actions comply with the Constitution, even in matters involving national security and immigration.

Conway finds allies among Democratic ranks

More recently, Conway has been reposting messages from progressive and Democratic leaders criticizing the president. In the past few days, he echoed progressive commentator Mehdi Hasan, who condemned CNN for continuing to feature political commentator and Trump supporter Scott Jennings on air—even after what Hasan sees as repeated instances of misleading the audience with minimal pushback or fact-checking.

Additionally, after the president appeared on the roof of the White House earlier this week to “check things out,” Conway reposted a message from Washington Senator Patty Murray, who sarcastically asked if the Epstein files were on the roof—highlighting the ongoing lack of transparency on an issue that remains important to the president’s base.
