Update:

The high-end fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, the Italian’s company has confirmed.

“Passed away peacefully”

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the organization said in a statement on Thursday.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.

“Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.”

“We feel the void”

In a separate statement, Armani’s employees and family added: “In this company, we have always felt like part of a family.”

“Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication.

“But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”

Missed June shows due to illness

A businessman worth an estimated $12.1 billion as of April, according to Forbes, Armani founded his now-iconic fashion house in July 1975.

The Piacenza native had previously risen to prominence in the fashion world as a designer for Nino Cerruti.

In June this year, Armani was forced to miss his label’s shows at Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week for the first time, having been hospitalized by what has been described in the Italian media as a lung infection.

Per Corriere della Serra’s Paola Pollo, Armani had suffered “a slight deterioration in his condition” in recent days as a result of a sudden stomach ache, “but nothing that foreshadowed the worst.”

Pollo added: “He had resumed eating and calling to stay up to date on everything.”

In its statement, Armani Group said a funeral chapel will be established in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, before a private burial.
