US Politics
Goodbye Matt Gaetz: What did Donald Trump’s former Attorney General nominee do before entering politics?
The Florida politician stepped down from his position as Member of the US House of Representatives and now is out as AG candidate
It’s been an intense few years for Mr. Gaetz. Six years in the Florida House of Representatives and then in Congress from 2017 to 2024 with a lot of TV time thanks to his encounters with members of his own party and of course confrontations with his Democrat counterparts. When President-Elect Trump nominated Gaetz for the Attorney General, he shocked everyone, including members of his own party due to Gaetz’s legal issues and controversies.
The Gaetz pick hit a roadblock because the nomination would not have been confirmed. A person who has been accused of child sex trafficking and statutory rape is even too controversial for many Republican politicians. His adventures in the Bahamas and Florida at parties with escorts and young women have been investigated by the Justice Department. His run ins with the law have been documented thoroughly by the media and put into doubt any possible future in Washington D.C.
What did Gaetz do before entering politics?
Trying to guess what might be next for Gaetz now that he is out of Washington D.C. requires looking at what he did before he started his political career. We have to go way back to when Gaetz graduated from law school at William & Mary in 2007. He briefly practiced law at Keefe, Anchors & Gordon in Fort Walton Beach. Shortly thereafter he got into politics, following his father’s footsteps, who was a member of the Florida State Senate from 2006 to 2016. Gaetz II became a member of the Florida House of Representatives in 2010.
So, after 14 years of politics in Florida and Washington D.C., what’s next for Gaetz? He could go back to practice law. He was suspended by the Florida bar in 2021, but was reinstated when he paid the $265 fees that were due.
Chances are Gaetz will run for governor in his home state in 2026 as Ron DeSantis cannot seek election for a third term in office. Voices from Washington D.C. are already rumoring that the plan for Gaetz is to continue his political career in the Sunshine State, but his time in Washington D.C. has come to an end.
