Got $1 million to spare? If so, you can book a vacation on the moon in the first lunar hotel for 2032
Reservations are open for the first off-world hotel.
In a development that certainly sets off my anti-Musk alarm system I’ve had put into me by a thing called sanity, reservations are now officially open to book your stay on the moon.
Fortunately, those of our beloved AS USA readers who subscribe to the same security system can turn off the red flashing lights, as this project is not the lovechild of the hangdog-faced son of South African emerald mine owner.
A young California space entrepreneur, Berkeley graduate Skyler Chan, is inviting the ultra-wealthy to secure a future stay on the Moon with their new hotel which I’m going to call ‘boutique’.
Galactic Resource Utilization Space (GRU), a startup based in Silicon Valley, has opened reservations for what it bills as the world’s first lunar hotel. And yes, the asking price is diarrhea-inducing.
“If we succeed, billions of human lives will be born on the moon”
In what sounds like the latest posthumous novel from L. Ron Hubbard, GRU plans to build a permanent hospitality outpost on the lunar surface, with operations targeted to begin by 2032. The company launched its booking website this month, offering prospective lunar guests the chance to reserve a room with a deposit of up to $1 million.
While final pricing for a full stay has not been firmly established as to not make you pass out before you get on the rocket, reports seem to indicate that the total price for the stay will exceed $10 million.
At the heart of the project is Skyler Chan, who founded GRU with backing from high-profile investors including figures connected to SpaceX, Nvidia and defence technology company Anduril. Ah.
“We live during an inflection point where we can actually become interplanetary before we die,” Chan said in a statement. “If we succeed, billions of human lives will be born on the moon and Mars and be able to experience the beauty of lunar and martian life.”
The proposed hotel would begin life as an inflatable habitat designed on Earth, then delivered to the lunar surface. Initial modules are expected to accommodate just a handful of guests for multi-day stays, offering experiences that read like a brochure from Doctor Who’s travel agent: moonwalks, rover drives and views of Earth. Over time, GRU envisions expanding these facilities using lunar soil and automated construction techniques to create more durable structures.
