According to insiders, Madonna unexpectedly rolled up on a private island where Paltrow and her then-husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin, were vacationing. Gwyneth’s initial reaction was one of surprise - their trip had been planned in total secrecy, so how did the Queen of Pop find out that they were there? An embarrassing situation that was about to get even worse.

The incident is detailed in Amy Odell’s book Gwyneth: The Biography, which is due to be released later this month. Excerpts were obtained by PEOPLE.

Madonna viewed as controlling, inconsiderate and rude

Madge reportedly insisted that the couple join her for a dinner at a large communal table. During the meal, tensions escalated when Madonna got into a heated exchange with her daughter, Lourdes Leon. It made Gwyneth and Chris, who only wanted to spend some quality time together, alone, deeply uncomfortable.

His patience tested to the limit and his reserved disposition completely at odds with Madge’s brash personality, Chris muttered that he didn’t want to spend another single second around “that horrible woman”.

Paltrow concurred, finally seeing the true side of Madonna a “toxic person”, she abruptly ended their friendship. The scale of the fallout was heightened by the fact that the two women were once so close.

Paltrow and Madonna’s friendship hits the rocks

On several occasions, Gwyneth spoken highly of the ‘Material Girl’ singer but after the infamous meal, the actress wasn’t so generous, telling UK Vogue she understood why personal trainer Tracy Anderson found Madge hard work: “Yeah, it’s good that [Tracy] doesn’t train Madonna any more. It was too much. She keeps people waiting - it takes up your whole day.”

Paltrow and Martin “consciously uncoupled” in March 2014 and both went on to find new partners although their relationship is amicable, as the actress recently told Vanity Fair: “It’s not quite brother, but we are complete family. He is there for me through anything, and vice versa.”

Madonna meanwhile, has had several high-profile romances since her divorce from Guy Ritchie in 2008, and is currently dating Jamaican soccer player Akeem Morris.
