Sunday, March 10, the 96th edition of the Academy Awards will take place at the Dobly Theater in Los Angeles. Over the years, the Oscars have had some Latino community representatives nominated and winners throughout its history.

Unfortunately, the Dominican Republic is not one of the countries that have stood out at the Oscar Awards since no actor, director, or other of Dominican descent or origin has ever won a golden statuette or been nominated.

The Caribbean country has even been one of the 100 countries that have presented a film as ‘Best Foreign Film’ to the Academy to be considered for an Oscar Award. Alas, none of them have been chosen to represent the country at the premier award ceremony for cinema.

Dominicans who have succeeded in Hollywood

Despite never being nominated for an Oscar, the Dominican Republic has sent some stars to Hollywood. Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldaña, and Michelle Rodríguez have roots on the island.

In addition, some stars born in the Dominican Republic include Algenis Pérez Soto, who appeared in the Captain Marvel movie, which stars Brie Larson. Soto played Captain Atlas, a member of Starforce in the Marvel Studios movie.

Another famous Dominican actress taking Hollywood by storm is Wendy Regalado, who won the Best Actress award for her film Jenni at the Hollywood Blood Horror Festival in Los Angeles, California.
