He picked lottery numbers from the license plate of a truck in front of him — and struck it rich

How do you pick your lottery numbers? Birthdays, anniversaries, or so-called lucky numbers? Whatever your strategy, you may have been doing it all wrong.

The truck tag worth $200,000

According to the Maryland Lottery, one player from St. Mary’s County won a $200,000 Pick 5 prize by choosing numbers from a license plate he spotted while stuck in traffic on his way to work.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, bought four $1 straight bets and four $1 boxed bets for the August 6 evening drawing and the August 7 midday drawing.

“I was going to work and stopped at a red light in Charlotte Hall and I noticed the tag on a truck, 19363,” the winner said after claiming the prize in Baltimore on August 15. “And the rest is history. I was gasping for air. I was so happy.”

He told the Maryland Lottery that he already knows how he will spend the money: renovating his parents’ old home, a project he plans to begin after retiring next year.

Despite his big win, he has no plans to stop playing and says he will keep choosing numbers that catch his eye in one way or another.

He also recalled missing out on a past lottery win after skipping a chance to play his parents’ home address, a combination that ended up hitting just days later.
