This isn’t an optical illusion. It’s exactly what has happened in China in the past. Fortunately, it’s also something that can be prevented.

Heat wave leaves cars looking ‘pregnant’ as extreme temperatures warp vehicle wraps

A couple summers back; China was hit by an intense heat wave. While this year Europe has seen roads and traffic lights melting under extreme temperatures, motorists in China experienced another unusual consequence: vehicles with dramatically swollen hoods.

Photos of the phenomenon went viral on social media, particularly on X, formerly known as Twitter. The images showed several vehicles with bulging hoods, earning them the nickname “pregnant cars.”

Why heat made these cars look ‘pregnant’

The strange appearance was not caused by a manufacturing defect or a mechanical failure. It also had nothing to do with where the vehicles were built. Some social media users speculated that the problem was related to the cars’ Asian origin because the photos came from China. In reality, the vehicles shown were German models.

The real culprit was the record-breaking heat affecting China at the time. The extreme temperatures caused the vinyl wraps on some vehicles to expand and bubble, creating the unusual swollen appearance. Vinyl wraps, whether installed for cosmetic purposes or paint protection, are engineered to withstand a wide range of weather conditions. However, prolonged exposure to extreme heat pushed some of them beyond their limits.

Extended exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight can weaken the vinyl, leading to bubbles as trapped air and gases released by the adhesive expand beneath the surface.

Although most automotive wraps include a protective layer designed to resist ultraviolet rays and reduce this type of damage, China’s record-setting temperatures proved too much for some installations.

How to protect a vinyl-wrapped vehicle from extreme heat

Anyone considering a vinyl wrap should understand that it requires regular maintenance.

The wrap should be cleaned routinely using a mild soap and a soft, non-abrasive cloth to prevent damage to the adhesive or protective finish.

It’s also important to limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day. Whenever possible, a wrapped vehicle should be parked inside a garage or in a shaded area. Doing so can significantly extend the life of the wrap while helping preserve both its color and structural integrity.

Finally, owners should inspect the wrap regularly for signs of wear, including peeling, bubbling, or fading, so minor issues can be addressed before they become more serious.

A similar incident in Spain

A similar story emerged in Spain last summer.

A driver brought his vehicle to a repair shop with damage that seemed almost impossible to believe. The housing of one side mirror and the trim on the B-pillar had partially melted after being exposed to intense sunlight.

The damage occurred because the vehicle had been parked in a spot where sunlight reflected off the glass facade of a nearby building and became concentrated on the car.

“I also noticed smoke coming from a small area on the seatback,” the owner said. “By the time I looked, there was already a hole in it, as if someone had burned it with a cigarette.”

Clearly shaken, he admitted he had no idea the parking space posed such a hazard. He added that if he had returned to his car just five minutes later, it probably would have caught fire.

The dangerous magnifying glass effect

The damage to the vehicle’s body panels and paint was caused by what’s commonly known as the magnifying glass effect.

In situations like this, sunlight passes through a building’s glass windows, which can focus and concentrate the sun’s energy and heat onto a small area. Under the most extreme conditions, if that concentrated heat reaches a combustible material, it can ignite a fire.
