Streaming site Tubi, no we haven’t head of them either, has released a new film called Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial. It seeks to tell the story of, you guessed it, the celebrity trail between the two actors as well as the period of their relationship. It stars Mark Hapka as Depp and Megan Davis as Heard.

The high-profile court case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard concluded at the end of May when a Virginia jury found that Depp had been defamed by his ex-wife. Heard had authored an op-ed in The Washington Post in 2018 in which she implied that Depp had abused her during their relationship.

Depp’s legal team brought three counts, all of which were found to be valid by the jury and he has been awarded $15 million. Heard’s counter-suit was successful on just one front and she was awarded $2 million in compensation.

Tubi, which is part owned by Fox, wanted to with Fox Entertainment’s MarVista Entertainment “to capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer,” according to Tubi chief content officer Adam Lewinson.

The name Hot Take alludes to a piece of provocative journalism that is quickly produced. Considering the speed in which this film has been made, mere months after the trial, perhaps the title has a double meaning.

Hot Take is written by Guy Nicolucci, who made his name as a writer on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Daily Show and is directed by Sara Lohman. it s
