The House GOP Twitter account, sent a message attacking one of the star witnesses of today’s House select committee on January 6th hearing, Sarah Matthews. Currently, Matthews serves as the Communications Director for the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, a role she has been in since February 2021.

Matthews worked in the White House as Deputy Press Secretary during the Trump administration and after she resigned she joined the House GOP team. The former White House official is testifying in front of the committee in that role. However, the fact that she is currently employeed by House GOP makes the attack they tweeted even more personal, grotesque, and weird. Why would one’s employer attack their employee as a “liar” and a “pawn” of one of their greatest political rivals?

The tweet was deleted around an hour after it was sent. The account received swift backlash, saying that it was a form of witness intimidation and, at a minimum, deeply unprofessional.

Who sent the Tweet?

The account is run by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s office who serves as the chair of the House Republican Conference. Con. Stefanik took the job from Liz Cheney who was ousted after she voted to impeach Donald Trump in the wake of the events of the 6th.

Why did Sarah Matthews chose to testify?

Sarah Matthews agreed to testify publicly after hearing Cassidy Hutchinson do so in late June. The former Deputy Press Secretary defended Hutchinson on Twitter saying “Anyone downplaying Cassidy Hutchinson’s role or her access in the West Wing either doesn’t understand how the Trump WH worked or is attempting to discredit her because they’re sacred of how damning this testimony is.”

These comments may have made her a target for Trump defenders who see this sort of a defection as a challenge to the former-president’s power within the party.

Sarah Matthews has a long record within Republican politics. In addition to working in the White House, she has also worked for Congressman John Boehner and Senator Rob Portman.

This comes after Vice Chair Liz Cheney told the public that Donald Trump had made an attempt to contact a witness that had not yet publically testified. The committee has taken these intervintions very seriously and has turned the evidence over to the Department of Justice.
