The oppressive heat of summer can make it nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep. Coupled with the high temperatures, mosquitoes’ incessant buzzing and biting can be a real nuisance. These pesky insects are drawn to us by the carbon dioxide we exhale and the various substances our skin releases. However, a simple solution to this problem is using a fan, which can provide a comforting breeze and keep mosquitoes at bay during those hot summer nights.

A Consumer Report study revealed that this practice decreases the probability of mosquito bites by between 45% and 60%. It also helps to reduce the room’s temperature, although it has some drawbacks. Some stand out, such as muscle rigidity and contractures, and it can also cause eye irritation and dry throat.

Other recommendations include frequent cleaning of the fan blades, which prevents dust from rising and reduces the risk of allergies—in addition, reducing the fan’s power while in operation is advisable, as it will prevent the environment from drying out and decrease the probability of negative health consequences.
