Knowing the right time to replace your tires can let you get the most out of them while not putting your car, your passengers and yourself in jeopardy.
How long do car tires last? The simple tests to know when to buy new ones
Many drivers regularly wonder how often they should replace their car tires. It is a fair question, but the answer is not a magic number. Instead, it depends on an ongoing combination of your vehicle, your driving habits, and the roads you travel.
Tires are much more than just another vehicle component. They are the only part of your car that makes contact with the road, making it essential to understand their lifespan for your safety.
Unlike many other parts, there is no exact replacement date listed in your owner’s manual. Instead, the best indicators come from regular inspection and a basic understanding of how tires age.

Tread wear
It is common to hear that a set of tires should last 50,000 to 60,000 miles. Manufacturers provide these estimates as durability ratings based on treadwear, and they serve as a helpful starting point.
However, relying solely on mileage can be misleading. A tire’s actual lifespan is determined first and foremost by the condition of its tread. That is why a visual inspection is the most reliable way to evaluate whether your tires still have life left in them.
One of the simplest and most effective methods, especially popular in the United States, is the penny test. Insert a penny into one of the tire’s main tread grooves with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing downward.
If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread depth is less than 2/32 of an inch, which is the legal minimum in most states. At that point, the tires should be replaced immediately. This quick test provides a much more accurate assessment than a mileage estimate because it reflects the tire’s actual condition.
The importance of tire age
This is where many drivers overlook a critical detail. A vehicle that is driven only occasionally, such as on weekends, may still have tires with plenty of tread after several years.
While they may appear to be in excellent condition, rubber naturally deteriorates over time. Exposure to sunlight, temperature changes, and the elements causes the rubber compound to dry out, harden, and become brittle.
To determine a tire’s age, look for the DOT (Department of Transportation) code on the sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year the tire was manufactured. For example, a code ending in “3221” means the tire was produced during the 32nd week of 2021.
Industry experts generally recommend having tires that are more than six years old inspected by a qualified professional every year. In addition, most vehicle and tire manufacturers advise replacing any tire that is more than 10 years old, regardless of how much tread remains.
As tires age, they can develop tiny cracks that may be difficult to notice. These cracks weaken the tire’s structure and significantly increase the risk of a blowout.
Driving habits and road conditions
The final piece of the puzzle depends on how and where you drive. Your driving style has a direct impact on tire life. Aggressive acceleration, hard braking, and fast cornering wear tires much faster than smooth, consistent driving.
Road conditions also make a significant difference. Driving primarily on well-maintained highways is much easier on tires than traveling on rough rural roads or streets filled with potholes.
Climate is another major factor. Extreme heat accelerates rubber deterioration, while colder temperatures can make the rubber stiffer and reduce its performance.
That is why proactive maintenance is so important. Rotating your tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, maintaining proper wheel alignment, and checking tire pressure every month are not expenses. They are investments in both your safety and the lifespan of your tires.
The next time you wonder how often you should replace your car tires, remember that the answer is found in the tread depth, the manufacturing date stamped on the sidewall, and the miles accumulated through your everyday driving.
