Presidential son Hunter Biden’s trial on federal gun charges will continue Tuesday, after a jury was quickly selected on Monday at a court in the Biden hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

First Lady Jill Biden was in court as six men and six women were selected as jurors, along with four alternates. President Joe Biden was not present but expressed his support for his son in a statement, saying that he and his wife love him “and are so proud of the man he is today.”

Hunter’s wife Melissa Cohen Biden and half-sister Ashley Biden were also in attendance.

Lawyers are scheduled to make their opening statements on Tuesday, with the trial expected to last from one to two weeks.

What are the charges against Hunter Biden?

Special counsel David Weiss of the Justice Department, who was appointed last year to supervise the investigation into the president’s son, is responsible for bringing about the indictment.

Prosecutors have charged Biden with lying about his use of illegal drugs on his application when he purchased a gun from a federally licensed dealer in 2018. They will try to demonstrate that he was aware he was lying when he checked the box for “no” when asked if he was illegally consuming a controlled substance.

Prosecution lawyers also accused him of illegally possessing the Colt Cobra .38-caliber handgun for 11 days. Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He is expected to maintain that he did not believe himself to be an addict at the time he purchased the gun. If convicted on all the charges he faces in the Delaware court, Hunter Biden could potentially be handed up to 25 years in jail.
