US Air Force sinks a historic Vietnam War ship with its flagship stealth weapon
The U.S. military has concluded a series of military maneuvers in the western Pacific in preparation for a possible future conflict with China
The United States is steadily sharpening its military edge in the Indo‑Pacific as planners prepare for the possibility of a future conflict with China.
In early July, after more than ten days of operations, the U.S., Japan, and Canada wrapped up Valiant Shield 2026, a massive joint exercise spread across several locations in the Western Pacific — including Guam.
During the drills, the U.S. Air Force showcased a new weapon that could significantly shift the balance in naval warfare.

A new long‑range anti‑ship missile enters the spotlight
Valiant Shield 2026 focused on testing how air, naval, and submarine forces from all three nations integrate in a scenario designed with China in mind. This year’s operations took place roughly 200 miles off Guam, where the retired USS Juneau — decommissioned in 2008 after service in Vietnam and the Gulf War — was used as a live‑fire target.
After removing hazardous materials from the ship, the U.S. turned it into a test platform for coordinated surface, subsurface, and air attacks. The headline moment came when a B‑2 Spirit bomber launched the U.S. military’s new LRSAM (Long‑Range Anti‑Ship Missile).
The LRSAM is built for modern naval combat:
- Long‑distance strike capability allows U.S. forces to hit enemy ships far beyond traditional ranges.
- Designed for contested environments, it can operate effectively even amid electronic warfare or heavy air defenses.
- Stealth bomber integration means a B‑2 can deliver the missile while remaining extremely difficult to detect — a major advantage in any long‑range conflict scenario.
