The controversy, it seems, has subsided. Last year, the Golden Globe awards were famously boycotted due to a lack of diversity in the nominations, with an article by the Los Angeles Times in 2021 revealing that the organisers had no black journalists among their 87 members.

But this year, they are back, and the Beverly Hilton Hotel will once be the stage of one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the world of film and television.

On 12 December 2022, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the list of nominees for their 2023 awards and Jamie Lee Curtis (64) was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role as Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

It is her 7th Golden Globe nomination in a run that stretches back to 1989 with the film A Fish Called Wanda. If Curtis manages to pick up the award, it will be her third win, having already taken the trophy for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in 1990 for her role in Anything But Love (she was nominated two years later for the same role but failed to win) and five years later for her role as Helen Tasker in True Lies.

Since her 1995 victory, Curtis has been nominated more 3 times: she played Heidi Holland in The Heidi Chronicles in 1996; in 2004 for her role in Freaky Friday and most recently in 2016, she played Cathy Munsch in the series Scream Queens, earning her a further nomination.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ activism

As well as being a Hollywood actress, Jamie Lee Curtis has also made a name as a defender of equal rights, including those of black and ethnic minorities, gay rights, and openly criticising Donald Trump, calling him “an embarrassment to this great country” on Twitter.

The Golden Globe awards take place on 10 January at 8pm E.T., and will be hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. British comedian Ricky Gervais had hosted the awards in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020, but now a less controversial ceremony is seen as more appropriate, perhaps.
