Just days after an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican National Convention has kicked off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to formally select the party’s candidates for president and vice president for the November election.

The RNC pushed through despite the shooting at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally where a bullet grazed Trump’s ear and one bystander was killed, with two others critically wounded.

“Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and the Republican National Convention, by two days,” the presidential candidate posted on Truth Social on Sunday.

“But [I] have just decided that I cannot allow a “shooter,” or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else,” he wrote.

The convention started on Monday, July 15, and will run through Thursday, July 18. It is being held at the Fiserv Forum, Baird Center, which is home to the Milwaukee Bucks, and Panther Arena.

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the event, including delegates, staff, visitors, and members of the media. There are 2,429 Republican delegates from all 56 states and territories, and Trump has gotten the support of 2,268 of them as of July 12.

The attempt on the ex-president’s life has heightened safety concerns, but the Secret Service says the security plans they had made will remain in place and unchanged.
