Will Mauricio Pochettino stay on as USMNT head coach? What we know so far

Following the Round of 16 exit at the 2026 World Cup, U.S. Soccer has already begun working on a contract extension for Argentine head coach Mauricio Pochettino to keep him at the helm of the USMNT for the next cycle.

According to journalist Andrés Cantor, the U.S. Soccer is already making moves to ensure Pochettino remains in charge with an eye on upcoming competitions.

These include the 2027 and 2029 Gold Cups, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the 2030 World Cup, and potentially the 2028 Copa América—provided the latter is held on North American soil and Concacaf teams are invited once again.

How are negotiations progressing?

Andrés Cantor also reports that talks between the manager and U.S. Soccer executives are progressing smoothly, with the Argentine expected to re-sign with the national team in the coming weeks.

U.S. Soccer officials want the head coach locked in before the massive FIFA international window in late September and early October, prompting them to fast-track contract negotiations.
