Tax season in the United States has come to and gone. From January 19 to April 15, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) received and processed the tax returns of millions of taxpayers corresponding to fiscal year 2023.

Those who knew they would not be able to file their tax return before the deadline had the option of requesting an extension from the IRS. In this way, the agency could grant them a six-month extension, moving the last day to file to October 15. However, the deadline to request the extension also expired on April 15.

The deadline to pay taxes and submit returns may have passed, but there are taxpayers who are still waiting to receive their refund. How can you track the payment you are expecting?

How to track the status of your refund

According to official information from the IRS, once your tax return has been processed, the government agency takes approximately 21 days to issue the refund payment, as long as you completed the procedure electronically and are waiting for payment via direct deposit.

People who made their declaration in the traditional hard-copy way and requested to receive the refund through a paper check via postal mail, will have to wait a little longer. For them, the period extends to six to 12 weeks.

Whatever the payment method requested, taxpayers can track the status of their refund to know exactly how long it will take for the payment to arrive. This is possible thanks to the free IRS tool, Where’s my refund?

To use the tool, you must have your Social Security or taxpayer identification number on hand, as well as the exact amount of your refund. You will also have to provide your marital status to facilitate the process.
