President Joe Biden will take the stage in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park this evening to give a key speech ahead of the midterms.

The Democrats had been expected to suffer badly in the November elections after months of economic woes and perceived inaction on the part of the White House. However Biden has enjoyed a positive summer with gas prices falling steadily and some key legislative priorities passed.

He is expected to try to capitalise on the Democrats’ new-found momentum and accuse Republican candidates and sitting lawmakers of supporting a dangerous ‘MAGA’ ideology.

How can I watch Biden’s speech?

The White House has scheduled the speech for 8pm (ET), giving the President a prime time audience for what is expected to be a blockbuster speech.

The address will be streamed live on the White House Twitter and YouTube channels and will likely be covered by most major new networks.

We will also be providing live footage and minute-by-minute coverage of the speech right here on AS USA.

On a call with reported ahead of the speech, a senior White house official confirmed that the President “will talk about the direct threats to democracy from MAGA Republicans and the extremism that is a threat right now to our democratic values,” NBC News reports.

What does ‘battle for the soul of the nation’ mean?

Biden has given fairly few major prime time speeches during his year and a half in the White House, and far fewer media events in general than his predecessor. But as the problems continue to mount for former President Trump, Biden appears emboldened and willing to go on the offensive.

Throughout the primaries held in recent months an astonishing number of GOP victors have supported, or at least refused to discredit, the election fraud lie that continues to be pushed by Trump and his allies.

Despite his removal from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Trump remains the most important figure in the Republican Party and uses his sway to dictate the course taken by the GOP. But as investigations into the insurrection, tax fraud, election tampering and the removal of top secret White House documents continue, Trump’s position appears weaker than at any point since leaving office.

It is in this context that Biden will give his address, focusing on the “battle for the soul of the nation,” a phrase Biden first used in 2017 in opposition to Trump.

The White House official said that Biden will decry MAGA as “a movement that does not recognize free and fair elections, a movement that increasingly is talking about violence in response to actions that they don’t like or don’t agree with, which is not the way democracies behave.”

However he insisted that it is “not a speech about a particular politician, or even about a particular political party.”
