Milk is an essential part of a healthy and balanced diet. Just one glass of milk is enough to provide an adult with their daily recommended intake of vitamins, along with calcium which promotes healthy muscles, strong bones and teeth.

It’s not unusual to find yourself occasionally craving milk - more than other drinks such as tea, coffee or even water. There are several reasons for this urge to drink milk - some people associate drinking milk with their childhood, while for others, it’s the best thing to quench their thirst.

Milk’s health benefits

That’s the number one reason - you’re thirsty. Milk hydrates the body as it is almost 90% water. And it is usually kept in the fridge, it is also served chilled, making it more refreshing. Unlike water, milk also contains naturally-occurring electrolytes - sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which help to regulate a number of bodily functions - from contracting muscles to maintaining blood pressure and a healthy balance of fluid.

The nutrients found in milk

  1. Protein
  2. Vitamin A
  3. Vitamin B12
  4. Vitamin B6
  5. Riboflavin
  6. Niacin
  7. Thiamine
  8. Pantothenic acid
  9. Vitamin D
  10. Calcium
  11. Magnesium
  12. Phosphorus
  13. Potassium

Spicy food and childhood memories

Drinking milk or similar dairy products can also help relieve the burning sensation in our mouths after eating spicy foods, such as curries. The fat and protein in milk has a soothing effect as it dissolves the compound capsaicin, which gives chili peppers its fiery kick. Its also why many Asian countries serve lassi, a cool, yogurt-based drink to cool you down after eating a curry. And soya milk works just as well as it is packed with proteins.

Milk and cookies is a classic combination which became popular at the start of the 20th Century with the advent of refrigeration. For many school kids, there is something magical about coming home to a plate of warm cookies and a cold glass of milk. It’s a feeling that doesn’t go away, with many adults loving to tuck into milk and cookies for a nostalgic kick as it reminds them of their childhood.

There are certain psychological associations we make when it comes to drinking milk, but basically, as one of the best superfoods out there, we often find ourselves craving a glass or milk simply because we are hungry, thirsty, or both.
