Update:

When choosing what cartoons to show to small children, it’s important to weigh several factors. Not everything is suitable – big entertainment companies always chase profits and often resort to questionable tactics that can harm children’s well-being.

Bright colors, rapid scene changes and a constant flow of events can encourage children to develop screen-related addictions, keeping them hooked on certain shows. Many children’s programs use this formula to boost their audience and revenue.

The surprising way Bluey helps children adapt to challenges

Recognizing these warning signs is essential not just to prevent addictive viewing, but also to ensure shows carry positive messages. One series that does is Bluey.

According to a recent study published by scientists at CQUniversity, the Australian animated series Bluey is the best choice for parents looking to entertain their children with screen time. Helping children adapt to new technologies is important for the future – and doing so with a show like Bluey is not only effective but also advisable.

Building resilience from an early age

Bluey follows a family of dogs living with their canine neighbors in Brisbane. Researchers watched every episode of the first three seasons to understand how the series works and what lessons it offers young viewers.

The study concluded that Bluey is especially effective at helping children build resilience at a very young age – a vital skill that allows them to adapt to new environments and find quick, simple solutions to challenges. Children who develop this capacity early tend to face fewer adjustment problems later in life.

To nurture resilience in a fun way, the show combines situations that demand adaptation with moments of creative play. The researchers found that resilience was a main or secondary theme in most episodes. Only creative play surpassed it, serving as the primary theme in 30% of episodes, compared with 27.3% for resilience.

Strengthening trust with parents

In the series, the main character – one of the puppies in the family – develops resilience with help from the parents. The study found that in 64.4% of storylines involving adaptation, the younger characters relied on their parents, especially their mother. This models for children the importance of seeking parental support when facing difficulties, reinforcing trust within the family.

Watching Bluey alongside their children also helps parents strengthen these lessons. While experts still advise against screen use for children under 6, they note that if parents occasionally choose a show, Bluey is the best option for providing both entertainment and valuable life lessons.
