Update:

When looking for their next gig, many applicants seek out high-paying remote roles. But what degrees are needed to get selected by a hiring manager? Here we will dive into five degrees that can put you on the path to earning $100,000 from the comfort of your own home.

Beyond this short guide, the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook is another great resource. Using the tool you can search for careers by annual pay, as well as other filters, like the educational attainment necessary and whether or not the number of positions is expected to grow over the next ten years.

Human Resources

Not all jobs in the field of human resources can be completed remotely, but there are plenty of postings that show it as a potential career path for those interested in remote work. Many companies looking to hire a generalist, who will work with employees on a variety of fronts, often seek candidates with a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or other related fields. A master’s in human resources or business could also boost one’s profile as a potential hiring manager.

For entry-level positions, like a Human Resource Specialist, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2023, the median annual pay was $67,650 per year.

As of February 2025, these jobs on Indeed were remote and depending on one’s experience paid well above that figure:

  • Talent Sourcer, Vetcove - $50,000 - $100,000 a year
  • Benefits Specialist, Philip Prata Agency - $50,000 - $100,000 a year
  • Learning and Development Specialist, TaxValet - $77,708 a year

For those with more experience, a role as a Manager in the field of Human Resources can earn a salary greater than $100,000 with the BLS placing the median salary for 2023 at $136,350 per year.

  • Human Resource Outsourcing, Senior Associate, RSM US LLP - $82,400 - $156,200 a year
  • Remote Human Resources Operations Manager, Learning Network - $90,000 - $120,000 a year

Data Analytics and Computer Science

Many might not dare to dabble in the field of programming, but the earnings potential for those with these skills is highly valued within the labor market.

This month, CareLytix LLC was advertising a remote role for a developer with a degree in computer science or a related field and was willing to pay up to $110,868.00. Offering a similar salary Ivim Services LLC was looking for a Backend Developer, with a degree in computer science or engineering.

The BLS reported that the median pay for a software developer in 2023 was $130,160 per year.

Economics and Business Administration

Though the job descriptions are often vague, those for data analysts are some of the most common jobs to see on online forums with high pay that can be carried out remotely. The pay can exceed $100,000, depending on the company, but many are looking for applicants with a bachelor’s degree, with computer science, statistics, economics, business, engineering, and other STEM degrees appearing frequently. Additionally, work experience will also boost your chances of getting hired, so looking at roles where you can gain that knowledge will help you land one of these higher-paying remote jobs.

  • Data Reporting Analyst, Versant Health - $90,000 - $100,000 a year
  • Analyst I, Fraud Strategy and Analytics, Affirm - $102,000 - $155,000 a year
  • Customer Data Analyst (US Remote), IntelePeer - $90,000 - $100,000 a year

High-paying roles where a bachelor’s degree might not be required

Though they are not always available in high numbers, there are always a few job postings that do not require a college degree, yet pay very high salaries and can be done remotely.

Quality Assurance Tester

No degree is required. One job description prefers applicants to have management experience, strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and “familiarity with company-recommended QA rubrics and software development frameworks.”

However, other companies state that they are looking for applicants with a degree in computer science or a related field, and many seek individuals with more than five years of work experience. Though you may not be able to make $100,000 in your first year on the job, a lower-level position will allow you to gain that experience and increase your earnings potential over the coming years.

The BLS advises that those interested in this field consider bachelor’s, or even a master’s degree, in computer science, as they stand a greater chance of being noticed by a hiring manager.

Engagement & Events Manager

Many companies looking for engagement and event managers are willing to pay quite a generous salary. Allstate, the insurance giant, was offering between $70,000 and $130,000 in a recent job posting. Though many companies would like to hire someone with a bachelor’s degree, they are also focused on hiring an applicant with experience.
