In 1929, the U.S. introduced Japanese white-eyes to fight pests: A century later, they’re outcompeting Hawaii’s native birds
Introduced to hunt farm pests, the Japanese white-eye has become one of the islands’ most invasive species.
Not every plan goes as intended, and in some cases, the unexpected outcome can reshape an entire ecosystem. That is precisely what happened in Hawaii with a small songbird imported from Japan in 1929 to help control insect pests.
Known as the Japanese white-eye, the bird was introduced after officials hoped it would feast on agricultural pests. Instead, the species spread rapidly across the island chain, establishing itself throughout the archipelago and becoming one of Hawaii’s most abundant land birds.
An introduced species turning into an ecological threat
The rise of the Japanese white-eye created a new environmental crisis. As its population surged, the species began competing for the same food sources as Hawaii’s native birds. This put added pressure on local species already struggling against habitat loss, introduced predators, and disease.
The Japanese white-eye poses a direct threat by vying for shared food supplies. Research tracking the bird’s impact revealed that beginning in 2000, juveniles across all native bird species exhibited lower body mass in regions where white-eye populations had grown.
It stands as a classic case of an introduced species adapting far beyond its original intent—integrating seamlessly into a foreign ecosystem and thriving at the expense of native wildlife.
