Every year, Switzerland’s wastewater carries an estimated 95 pounds of gold and 6,600 pounds of silver, most of it originating from the country’s watchmaking industry, precious metal refineries, and other industrial activities. Together, those precious metals are worth more than $3.2 million annually.

Switzerland’s unusual case also highlights a growing trend. Wastewater is no longer viewed solely as waste but as a valuable source of recoverable resources. International organizations have pointed out that wastewater can yield valuable materials, energy, and nutrients, turning an environmental challenge into an economic opportunity.

Most people will never discover a fortune in their home’s plumbing, but using drains responsibly can save money, protect the environment, and help ensure that valuable resources do not literally end up going down the drain.
