In which states are gas prices falling fastest in September 2024?

As the final weeks of summer approach, gasoline prices are expected to fall in some states, providing some relief to households as prices remain high. As the holiday weekend comes to a close, those who hit the road may have noticed a drop in gasoline prices compared to what they paid at the pump last year. According to the Energy Information Adminstration (EIA), prices were down thirteen percent compared to those captured a year prior.

Over the holiday weekend, AAA reported that gas prices fell in forty-five states and the District of Columbia, with Nebraska (-1.81 percent), Ohio (-1.64 percent), Indiana (-1.56 percent), Oklahoma (-1.53 percent), and Texas (-1.47 percent) seeing the highest drop in price since Friday. According to the Energy Information Adminstration (EIA), prices were down thirteen percent compared to those captured a year prior.

The EIA divides the country into five regions to evaluate fluctuations in gasoline prices, and on Wednesday, August 28, the agency reported that prices in all five were falling.

The West Coast and Rocky Mountains have seen prices fall the most over the last year. In Washington, prices fell from $5.094 to $4.162; In Idaho, prices fell from $4.164 to $4.164; and in Utah, prices hit $3.554 on September 2, down from $4.305 a year ago.

Price forecasts for 2025

In early August, the EIA’s ‘Short-term Energy Outlook’ reported that in 2025, the agency expects the average gallon of gas nationwide to stand around $3.30, down 10 cents from the average forecasted for 2024.
