Iran-linked drone attack targets Saudi oil facility tied to World Cup sponsor

Ras Tanura refinery briefly shut after intercepted drones spark fire, as oil prices surge and global energy tensions intensify.

Iran has launched another attack targeting Saudi Arabia. This time, the focus was the Ras Tanura refinery on the Gulf coast, owned by Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s largest oil producers.

The state-run company is also a major sponsor of the FIFA World Cup and one of FIFA’s key commercial partners. Beyond soccer, Aramco is heavily involved in global sports, including Formula 1 with Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, as well as the Dakar Rally, women’s golf, cricket, and other major events.

Limited damage after drones intercepted

No casualties were reported because authorities had enough time to shut down the refinery before the incident escalated. However, there was significant material damage. Ras Tanura was closed as a precaution, and officials say the situation is now under control.

According to a spokesperson for the Saudi Ministry of Defense speaking to Al Arabiya, two drones were intercepted near the facility. Debris from the interception caused a small fire, but no injuries were reported.

Oil markets react to rising tensions

The attack adds another flashpoint to an already tense day in energy markets. Brent crude futures jumped by about 10 percent following the news.

“The attack on the Ras Tanura refinery in Saudi Arabia marks a significant escalation, with Gulf’s energy infrastructure now in Iran’s crosshairs,” Torbjorn Soltvedt, senior Middle East analyst at Verisk Maplecroft, told Reuters.

Official statement from Saudi authorities

The Saudi Press Agency reported that an official source from the Ministry of Energy said the incident occurred at 7:04 a.m. local time Monday (11:04 p.m. ET Sunday).

According to the statement, the Ras Tanura refinery suffered limited damage as a result of debris from the interception of two drones nearby. The incident caused a small fire that was quickly contained by emergency response teams. No injuries or fatalities were reported. Some operational units at the refinery were temporarily shut down as a precaution, though officials said there was no impact on petroleum product supplies to local markets.

Why Ras Tanura matters to global oil supply

The Ras Tanura refinery is a key supplier of transportation fuels, particularly diesel, to European buyers, and it also produces smaller volumes of gasoline. Nearby sits Aramco’s largest export terminal for crude oil and petroleum products, which includes storage tanks, port berths, and offshore loading facilities.

Because of its strategic importance, any disruption at Ras Tanura can quickly ripple through global energy markets and push oil prices higher.
