Is After Ever Happy the last movie of the saga? Will there be a fifth ‘After’ film?

Fans of the wildly popular ‘After’ franchise will be happy to know that After Ever Happy will not be the last installment confirmed by Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

After Ever Happy debuted this week, the fourth and thought-to-be final chapter of the ‘After’ saga based on a series of novels from Anna Todd by the same name. However, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays Hardin Scott in the young adult romance sensation, confirmed on the ‘After’ Instagram page that a fifth installment has already wrapped.

“Hi guys, it’s Hero and I’m so excited to finally share some massive news with you all,” Tiffin said. “We have just wrapped filming on the fifth ‘After’ movie.”

For the uninitiated, the ‘After’ franchise follows the tumultuous relationship, described as “toxic”, between bad boy Hardin and naïve Tessa Young, played by Josephine Langford. The franchise has had tremendous box office success raking in $69 million on only a $14 million budget for the first installment. The strong fan base helped the next two installments fare well too despite limit theatrical releases due to the pandemic.

What do we know about the fifth installment of ‘After’?

Details are thin right now besides the fact that filming has finished, but Hero did give us the title for the next installment. “I can’t tell you too much about it just yet, but I tell it will be called ‘After Everything’ and I cannot wait for you all to see it,” he said on the Instagram post.

If the rhythm of prior films in the franchise is anything to go by, the fifth installment ‘After Everything’ should be out next year. But there may be another film or two from the ‘After’ franchise in the near future.

Prequel and sequel of ‘After’ franchise in the works

It was reported in April last year that two spin-offs of the saga were in the works, a prequel and sequel, later confirmed by director Castille Landon in an interview with Teen Vogue. Both were supposed to film back-to-back last fall but so far, we haven’t heard much about either.

The prequel “Before,” is supposed to be loosely based on the fifth book from the series of the same name. The story centers on Hardin’s teenage years, his first love and how those events shape the person who we meet in ‘After’.

The sequel will focus on the next generation, Tessa and Hardin’s children, Emery and Auden, and their cousin, Addy. It will follow them as they try to avoid making the same mistakes as their parents.
