Is Johnny Depp acting again after his trial with Amber Heard?

After winning his lawsuit against Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has been busy getting his career back on track.

Update:
Depp v Heard: the ongoing story

After a highly-publicised, six-week defamation trial which pitted him against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp was ready to let off some steam and put the case behind him. He joined Jeff Beck on the road for a couple of months, accompanying the guitarist on his European tour and the pair also released an album, 18. But since the final date of the tour at the Paris Olympia on 25 July, the 59-year-old actor has been focusing on finding work and getting his acting career back on track.

Dior deal

Earlier this month he was believed to have signed a lucrative new deal with Dior, to continue as the face of their Sauvage cologne - an alliance which they have enjoyed since the fragrance was rebranded and relaunched in 2015.

Depp has also been selling off prints from his Friends & Heroes collection - a limited edition series of pop-art portraits of Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor, Al Pacino and Keith Richards through London’s Castle Fine Art gallery. The edition of 780 prints was sold either as individual pieces for $3,973 or $15,040 for a set of four and sold out within hours, earning him a cool $3.6 million dollars.

New film role

He has also been occupied in what he is best known for - acting. Before the Heard case, Depp had agreed to star in a French production, La Favorite, directed by filmmaker Maïwenn. Shooting started at the beginning of July at various locations in France including Versailles Palace. The French language film tells the story of Jeanne Bécu, the illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress who managed to rise through the ranks of the court of King Louis XV to become his last official mistress. Maïwenn stars as Bécu, (later married to become Madame du Barry) - the ill-fated maîtresse-en-titre, who was beheaded by guillotine while Depp stars as long-serving King Louis XV, Le Bien-Aimé (the Well-loved one).

It is his first acting appearance in a French language movie and his first major acting role since he starred in the leading role as American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith in Andrew Levitas’ 2020 film Minamata. His next project, La Favorite will go on general release in France in 2023 and will be available on subscription through Netflix in France only, once it has completed its theatrical window.
