Is your cat obsessed with sleeping in the sink? Here’s why and how to stop it
Cats can display strange behaviors at times such as sleeping in the bathroom sink. It may just be a habit but could indicate they need to go to the vet.
Cats can be odd creatures at times and get up to all kinds of mischievousness. However, one of their main hobbies is sleeping, spending three-quarters of the day napping.
They typically have their favorite spots for a snooze, generally one where there is a ray of sunshine to give them warmth. But some also like to curl up in bathroom sinks, which at first glance may seem odd given that they run the risk of getting wet. It may be a harmless behavior but could indicate that they need a trip to the vet.
Why your cat is sleeping in the sink
Felines, while they may not be fans of getting wet, like to be around sources of fresh water.
For that reason, from a cat’s point of view the bathroom sink is actually an ideal place to get some R&R. On top of that, generally, the bathroom is a quieter room in the house, away from the hustle and bustle in other parts of the house.
Also, the bathroom is full of enticing objects to play with, be it the towels, shower curtain or toilet paper roll. Additionally, the curved shape and smooth, cool surface of the sink provides a perfect place to curl up and get some Z’s after playing around.
On the other hand, if your cat isn’t one to typically sleep in the sink but takes up the habit it may mean that they are sick and should have a visit with the vet. Check to see if your cat is exhibiting other symptoms like changes in eating or toilet behavior, or is losing weight.
How to stop your cat sleeping in the sink
If you don’t like your cat sleeping in the sink there are a couple of ways to get them to stop doing it. First of all, you want to make sure that you aren’t encouraging them to do it by petting them while they are in the sink.
One of the easiest ways to get them to stop sleeping in the sink is to simply shut the door. This may upset you cat but if you provide them with another suitable alternative, with time they will forget about the sink.
If your cat is sleeping in the sink because they find it comfortable, simply make it less comfortable. You can put some tin foil, which cats generally dislike because of its texture and the sound it makes, in the sink.
You can also fill up the sink with a little bit of water which will make them think twice after the first jump into it and realizing they cannot lay down in the basin.
