It’s official: NY, NJ, and Connecticut to increase the minimum wage in 2025
The minimum wage will rise in the New York tri-state area at the beginning of the year. Here are the new rates for New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York.
Millions of Americans will see an increase in the minimum wage starting January 1, 2025. Currently, the federal minimum wage stands at $7.25 per hour. This figure has not changed since 2009, making it insufficient to cover the current cost of living, which impacts millions of families across the United States.
For this reason, several states in the American Union have chosen to implement laws that increase the minimum wage at the state level year after year. Currently, 30 states, plus the District of Columbia, have legislation that offers a minimum wage above the federal level, including the tri-state area of New York, which comprises the states of the Big Apple, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
How much will the minimum wage increase?
In New York, the minimum wage will increase by $0.50 starting January 1, 2025, while in New Jersey, the increase will be $0.36, and in Connecticut, it will be $0.66. Using the current wage, these are the minimum wage amounts in the New York tri-state area for next year:
With this new increase, Connecticut’s minimum wage also surpasses the $16 per hour barrier, placing it among the states with the highest minimum wage by 2025, as well as certain cities in New York, where the minimum wage exceeds $16.
