Update:

Choosing a name for a new member of the family can take a great deal of thought as well as a degree of compromise to arrive at a name that both parents agree on.

Baby name trends have shifted a lot during the past century - and even in the past decade. Whereas once, newborns might be named in line with family tradition - for example, taking the grandfather/mother’s name, in today’s, information-saturated digital age, baby names are more likely to be influenced by what’s in fashion or a well-known celebrity.

According to BabyCenter

The Social Security Administration (SSA) gathers information on all children born in the United States and compiles an annual list of the most popular names.

The database stretches back 100 years - curiously, the top four most popular boys’ names during the 1920s were Robert, John, James and William - only the latter two appear in this year’s top 10. As for the girls, Mary, Dorothy, Helen, Betty and Margaret topped the list in Roaring Twenties but are nowhere to be found in the 2025 ranking. Robert and Mary remained the most popular names throughout the 20s and 30s right up until 1939 when James took top spot. Mary continued as the top choice for baby girls until 1947 when it was usurped by Linda.
