J.C. Penney announces new closures: List of stores that will close soon

J.C. Penney is preparing to close some stores in a handful of states across the country. Here is the complete list of the locations that will shutter soon.

JCPenney is preparing to close some stores in a handful of states as a result of its plan to reverse certain financial problems and improve the stores it still has .

In late 2020, the more than 120-year-old company negotiated its way through Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. Since then, the company has closed more than one hundred locations.

“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility,” the company said in a statement at the time.

In the coming months, JCPenney will close four stores in several states, the department store said, according to a report from RetailDive.

According to what was reported by the company, the stores in the following shopping centers will close sometime before September 22:

  • Shoppes at Bel Air in Mobile, Alabama

  • Elm Plaza in Waterville, Maine

On the other hand, its department store at the Westfield Annapolis Mall in Annapolis, Maryland, will close in 2025.

Of the four recently planned closures, the company said it “has not been able to find suitable locations in the market” for new stores.

“Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for these store locations and have been unable to find suitable locations in the market, the company said.

We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at these locations throughout the years. We continue to work to make every dollar count for America’s diverse, working families and welcome them to shop at our other JCPenney stores in the area and at JCPenney.com,” the statement continued.

As for future closures, according to RetailDive, last month, Simon Property Group CEO David Simon said it is not likely that J.C. Penney’s will close many stores soon and, in fact, could benefit from the opening of new ones. JCPenney currently operates 663 stores, mostly located in shopping centers.
