Juan Varela named Director of PRISA Media for the United States

PRISA Media has taken a new step in its commitment to the North American market with the appointment of Juan Varela as Director in the United States. Varela who boasts a wealth of experience in the world of digitalisation and media management, will be responsible for the commercial development and new PRISA Media projects in this market.

The CEO of PRISA Media, Carlos Núñez, highlighted: “as we previously stated during the presentation of our strategic plan, the US market has become one of our priorities. Biography

Juan Varela is a journalist and media executive with more than 30 years of experience leading projects in Spain, the United States, Latin America and Europe. Specialised in digital transition and business development, he has worked in digital media, press, radio and television designing projects and in an advisory capacity relating to the launch and development of new products.

With extensive international and US experience, he has been Vice President of Impremedia -the company behind the aggregation of Hispanic news media in the United States, Business Director of Agencia Efe and CEO of Efe News in the US, where he also worked for media outlets such as NBC News and Telemundo.

He was Vice-President of the European Pressphoto Agency (Germany), the largest European graphic news agency, and for two decades he worked as a consultant for major Latin American media such as La Nación and Grupo Clarín in Argentina, Grupo Globo and O Correio Braziliense in Brazil, El Mercurio in Chile, El Comercio in Peru, the GFR Media group (El Nuevo Día) in Puerto Rico and others such as El Observador in Uruguay, La Prensa Gráfica in El Salvador and Cadena Capriles in Venezuela.

In Spain, he has worked for some of the main media groups in the country, such as Vocento and Prensa Ibérica, driving their digital areas and businesses. He was the founder of media such as the daily El Sol or ADN.es and has directed local media such as Diari de Tarragona and was deputy director at El Periódico de Catalunya and Diario 16.

A graduate of the University of Navarra, he holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from the Escuela de El País and a Master’s degree in Digital Business Management from the University of Barcelona.
