Kamala Harris has set a new record in this US presidential campaign fundraising by raising $81 million in just 24 hours following her announcement as the Democratic candidate.

The fundraising surge comes as Harris quickly garnered support from a broad coalition of Democratic leaders and organisations. Over 888,000 donors contributed, with more than 500,000 making their first donation of the 2024 campaign cycle.

“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections,” campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said.

Before Harris’s record, the highest single-day fundraising total this campaign was reported by Donald Trump, who raised $50 million immediately after his felony convictions.

Harris’s achievement not only eclipses that figure but also positions her campaign strongly against potential Democrat challengers, as her position as candidate will not be confirmed until the Democrat convention in August.

Presidential campaign funding records in history

In recent USpresidential elections, campaign funding has reached unprecedented levels, particularly during the 2020 election cycle, which was marked as the most expensive in history. Total spending for the 2020 election surpassed $14.4 billion, with approximately $5.7 billion allocated specifically for the presidential race alone.
