King Charles III comments on his brother, former Prince Andrew’s arrest: “The law must take its course”
The British monarch has released a statement regarding the arrest of his brother by U.K. authorities on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
The Thames Valley Police announced on Thursday that it “has opened an investigation into the offence of misconduct in public office.” As part of that investigation “a man in his sixties from Norfolk” was arrested.
Although police did not name the man taken into custody, “as per national guidance,” it was soon reported that he was Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, brother of King Charles III. The investigation stemmed from revelations that the former Duke of York may have passed confidential commercial information and government documents to the late disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This alleged misconduct came to light with the release of over 3 million documents by the U.S. Department of Justice from the Epstein files, which represent roughly half of those in their possession that they are legally required by Congress to make public.
The former prince has consistently denied any wrongdoing although he reached a multi-million-dollar out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who claimed that the late sex offender and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell trafficked her to the then Duke of York when she was just a teenager.
King Charles III says “the law must take its course”
Andrew’s ties to Epstein have been a continuing headache for the British monarchy over the past several years. But today’s extraordinary news is unprecedented for the modern Royal Family and has even led some to call for King Charles III to abdicate.
His Majesty The King was quick to address the matter releasing a statement not long after his brother’s arrest. It reads as follows:
“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.”
“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”
“As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
