Liz Rose, human behavior expert, on narcissists: “People who tell you who they are in the first five minutes”
The human behavior expert and creator of the podcast MAGNETIC with Liz Rose, shared five key nonverbal tells that will help you spot a narcissist.
Dealing with narcissists can be infuriating from their lack of empathy to constantly trying to hog the attention, always steering the conversation to themselves, and the bragging. A recent study narrowed down just exactly why narcissists are so unbearable; “interpersonal hostility and entitlement.”
So how can you know if someone is a narcissist before it is too late? Liz Rose, a human behavior expert and creator of the podcast MAGNETIC with Liz Rose, says that they have “very specific nonverbal tells. And once you know what to look for you can spot them fast.”
Five key nonverbal tells of narcissists
The behavior expert posted a video on TikTok video in which she shared five key nonverbal cues of a narcissist. They include the following:
- Constant eye scanning
- Smirking instead of smiling
- Exaggerated expressions
- Invasive touch or space violations
- Stillness when they should be showing empathy
In the description to the video she also mentions to “watch for signs of self-admiration, such as frequently checking their reflection or preening gestures.” Narcissists will typically adopt an overly confident posture, “such as standing tall with shoulders back, to project superiority.”
“People tell you who they are [a narcissist] in the first five minutes,” Rose told the New York Post, adding, “most of us just ignore the signals."
“Trust your nervous system,” she concludes in her video. “If they’re body language feels off, controlling or performative, believe the signal and protect your peace.”
