Update:

Certain features can turn a seemingly ordinary, nondescript $5 bill into a highly sought-after collector’s item, even if it looks like a regular bill. Let’s take a closer look at some of those details that could multiply the face value of the $5 bill in your wallet.

Patterned Serial Numbers: Each $5 bill has a unique serial number consisting of 10 or 11 numbers and letters. Serial numbers with repeated patterns, for example: ’22222222′, ‘77773333′ etc. are extremely desirable to collectors. Serial numbers with unique combinations or specific patterns can be worth thousands of dollars.

Low Serial Numbers: Collectors are always looking for low serial numbers which start with six or seven zeros, such as ’0000001′, are often more valuable because they indicate they were among the first printed in that series. A bill with a number below 100 or even 1,000 can sell for $10 to $300, depending on its condition.

Low Serial Numbers: Similarly, high serial numbers are also popular - ones which start with at least four nines. The more nines you bill has, the more valuable it could be. A high serial number starting with five nines can fetch between $50 and $80 and from $100 to $400 for a serial number with six or seven nines.

Million Serial Numbers: A million serial numbers start with a single digit followed by seven zeros, eg. 90000000, 50000000, 80000000... Bills with a million serial numbers can fetch $700 to $1,800 on Ebay.

Printing Errors: Bills with printing errors, such as missing ink impressions or misaligned designs, can fetch a much higher value. A 1988 bill with a printing error could be worth up to $4,000 due to an ink placement mistake.

Star Notes: ‘Star notes’ are replacement bills for damaged ones. These bills usually have extra value, especially if they are from early years or in perfect condition. A circulated 2017A star note is currently listed for $175.00 and an uncirculated one for $1,200 on eBay.

Old Series or Low Serial Numbers: Bills from old series, especially those from the 1950s and 1960s, are highly sought after by collectors. A $5 bill from 1950A with a PMG 64EPQ - birthday low serial number 00000087 is currently listed for $425 on eBay.

Special or Commemorative Editions: Bills that were part of special or commemorative editions (like anniversaries or unique designs) often have additional value for collectors. For instance, the 1950A and 1963 Red Seal $100 Bills are highly collectible.

Bills Issued by Rare Banks: If the bill was printed by a small bank or a place that no longer exists, it is likely to be worth more than other bills of the same denomination. A $5 bill issued by the First National Bank of Aransas Pass in 1929 sold for $3,360.

1890 Treasury Notes: The 1890 Treasury Notes are extremely rare. Only 14 known examples exist, and one sold at auction for $282,000 in 2013.

1861 Demand Note: Demand Notes were the first paper currency issued by the U.S. government. An 1861 Demand Note sold for $138,000 in 2007.

1934 Silver Certificate: The $5 Silver Certificates issued in 1934, especially those with a brown Hawaii seal, can be worth up to $6,000. Another example, a North Africa version with a yellow seal, can sell for $1,850.

Keep an eye out for these features on the $5 bills in your wallet, because you never know, just might be sitting on a small fortune.
