Update:

Luigi Magione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthCare’s CEO Brian Thompson in December, is standing trial for the murder. Since his capture in Altuna, Pennsylvania, and the release of his identity to the public, he gathered a following, with many commenting on his attractive looks, converting him into a controversial sex symbol.

Be it his looks or the anger many hold towards the health insurance industry, thousands have contributed to Mangione’s legal fund, which has surpassed $1 million in value, which can be used to pay his legal team. Donations have been made through the GiveSendGo platform.

A website has been set up to keep those interested in updates on Maginone’s case informed, and the defendant has posted a statement expressing his gratitude for the donations and letters he has received.

“I am overwhelmed by - and grateful for - everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” wrote Magnione.

He recounted that as he read the letters, he found that their authors “transcended political, racial, and even class divisions,” and that though he could not reply to each one, he cherished and read them all.

What’s on the docket for Magione?

Mangione faces charges in three jurisdictions: New York, Pennsylvania, and federal court.

In early April, the Justice Department announced that it would be seeking the death penalty, which his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said was the result of “government dysfunction and one-upmanship {...] between state and federal prosecutors.” Mangione’s defense asserts that the decision to seek the death penalty flies in the face of the “recommendation of the local federal prosecutors, the law, and historical precedent.”

According to his legal defense website, Mangione will appear in New York state court in New York City on June 29, 2025.

Earlier this month, Mangione’s legal team filed a motion to the New York Supreme Court, to consider violation of Mangione’s when he was arrested in Pennsylvania and asked that the terrorism charges be dropped, citing a failure by the grand jury “to establish the request element that Mr. Mangione intended to intimate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government by intimination or coercion or affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination of kiddnapping.”

Lastly, the motion urged the court to consider how the three sets of charges brought against him represent double jeopardy and threaten his right to a fair trial, as information from one could be subsequently used in another.
