Mark Cuban leaves Shark Tank after 15 seasons having invested $33 million: Here’s how much those stakes are worth today

After 14 years as a ‘shark’ investor on the ABC reality program, Mark Cuban finally left the tank after last Friday’s episode.

The ‘Shark Tank’ star was on the show for 15 seasons, becoming the most well-known face of the hit series. Now that he has officially called time on the show it’s a good opportunity to look back on the investments that he made, and judge exactly how well he placed his money.

Cuban told CNBC Make It that he invested “around $33 million” in businesses on the show. From that, he has received around $35 million in cash returns but the real profits lie in the equity that he still holds. He estimates that his combined stakes in his Shark Tank businesses are worth “at least $250 million.”

Across his time on the show the website Shark Tank Insights reports that he invested in more than 200 businesses. He actually committed more than $61.9 million of his own money to entrepreneurs in front of the camera but many of those deals fell apart after the recording.

Throughout his time on the show, Cuban prided himself on supporting entrepreneurs who come onto Shark Tank. He uses it as an opportunity to support people trying to realize their dream, as well as boosting his own profile in the media.

“I don’t do the show to get the best investments,” Cuban said in July 2022. “And I don’t always invest because I think I’ll make money. Sometimes my deals are purely to help [an entrepreneur] or send a message.”

Cuban’s departure form Shark Tank comes just 18 months after he sold his controlling stake in the Dallas Mavericks. He first bought the majority stake in 2000 for $285 million and led the team for more than two decades before selling 73% of the Mavericks’ shares, reportedly making around $3.5 billion in the process.
