Over the last year we’ve seen plenty of cuts and even more worry, with the Federal Reserve clear on its message of uncertainty.

However, interest rates were left unchanged on Wednesday 29 January, after the central bank opted for a more cautious approach on additional cuts.

What is the current interest rate in the US?

Following progress in September regarding bringing down interest rates, it was decided that the cuts would be paused for the time being. Three meetings had taken place over the previous months, with the Fed lowering rates from 4.25 percent to 4.5 percent, despite Donald Trump’s loud calls for further cuts.

When will interest rates be reviewed?

In a statement, the Fed said that “recent indicators suggest that economic activity has continued to expand at a solid pace. The unemployment rate has stabilized at a low level in recent months, and labor market conditions remain solid. Inflation remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who has at times been under threat of being fired by Donald Trump, said that “we feel like we don’t need to be in a hurry to make any adjustments... Right now, we feel like we are in a very good place. The policy is well-positioned and the economy is in quite a good place.”

As for when interest rates will be reviewed again in order to reach the goal of 2%, officials said they believe the process will resume this year, with the next meeting scheduled for March 18-19.
