Update:

During your childhood, you probably came up with plenty of games to pass the time with friends and family. It’s unlikely, however, that your inventions ever made you a millionaire before you had even graduated high school.

That’s exactly what happened to Alex Butler, now a 15-year-old living in Seattle who created a wildly successful game at the age of seven. He is the creator of ‘Taco vs Burrito’, a card game that invites players to invite the craziest, most bizarre food combinations that they can.

The simple game involved a special deck of cards, allowing players to create unique combinations as they go. It’s a simple, premise but it’s one that has racked up more than 1.5 million sales and is setting teenaged Alex up for a very exciting future.

“It’s been such a fun ride. It’s kind of crazy to think back to it being an idea for my son, and then all of a sudden we’ve sold a million copies of the game,” said Leslie Pierson, Alex’s mother.

Pierson and husband Mark Butler had always encouraged games in the family and were eager to foster their son’s entrepreneurial instincts. The game was developed over months of family walks in the countryside and Pierson was caught off-guard by Alex’s relentless interest in the idea.

“I really did think it was just gonna be a chat about how a product gets made,” Pierson explained.

“It’s been a really good experience,” she added. “And I love that Alex had that experience of creating something, so that if he has an idea in the future, anything’s possible.”

The game’s official website describes it as, “The Wildly Popular, Absurdly Funny, Surprisingly Strategic Card Game Created by a 7-year-old... A Perfect Family-Friendly Party Game For Kids, Teens & Adults.”

So what’s next for Alex? Now a teenager, his interests have shifted from card games to video games and he’s looking to expand into a new sector. Rather than hold the rights to ‘Taco vs Burrito’ in perpetuity he opted to sell his stake and will use it to help fund his next entrepreneurial efforts.
