One Golden Retriever had a lucky escape after being abandoned in Louisville in the midst of a snowstorm.

Meet Jack Frost, the dog who survived the winter storm in an outdoor parking lot

We’ve all heard about this winter being particularly harsh across many parts of the United States, so spare a thought for poor little Jack Frost, a dog who was forced to spend a whole night outside in the midst of a winter storm. Thankfully, he lived to tell the tale.

The Golden Retriever was found in a parking lot in Louisville on January 7, the day after the city in Kentucky - and Jack Frost himself - had been battered by an especially severe snowstorm.

After braving the elements overnight, he was taken to Louisville Metro Animal Services by Good Samaritan to from Houston, according to Golden Retriever Rescue & Adoption of Needy Dogs (GRRAND). Sadly, his owners failed to collect him, which led to GRAAND giving him his ‘new’ name, inspired by him being found in the snow with frozen fur.

Jack Frost is currently in foster care, with his foster family claiming he is “sweet, sits and lies on command and is house trained”. He will, however, be put up for adoption by GRRAND, which will ensure he has a permanent home before too much longer.

Tips for looking after your pets in winter

With winter in full swing, it’s worth bearing in mind the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ suggestions on how best to look after pets when it’s particularly cold.

The ASPCA offers the following advice:

  • If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside
  • Keep your home humidified and be sure to towel dry your pet as soon as they come inside
  • Massage petroleum jelly or other vet-approved paw protectants into paw pads before going outside to protect from salt and chemical agents
  • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter
  • After each walk, make sure to wash and dry your pet's feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals
  • Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells
  • Thoroughly clean up any anitfreeze spills
  • Feed your pet a little extra in the winter months
  • Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts
  • Never let your dog off leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm
