Paid prenatal leave and higher wages coming in 2025 to New York

The New Year will bring with it some new improvements to the quality of life in the Empire State. Among them is a minimum wage increase and paid prenatal leave.

The increase to the former will make New York’s base salary one of the highest in the country. Under the latter, New York will become the first state in the nation to offer paid time off for medical care related to pregnancy.

2025 minimum wage increase in New York

The minimum wage in New York will increase again in 2025, effective January 1, as part of a previously approved progressive plan. For New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County, the minimum wage will rise to $16.50 per hour.

In the rest of New York State, the minimum wage will increase to $15.50 per hour. Both represent a 50-cent bump from the 2024 pay floor.

Additionally, home care aides will see their minimum wage increase to $18.55 per hour in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester County, and $17.55 per hour in the rest of the state.

New paid prenatal care leave in New York

Effective January 1, 2025, any privately-employed pregnant New Yorker will get in addition to their existing sick leave, an additional 20 hours of paid time off, under New York’s groundbreaking paid prenatal care leave. This new measure will ensure that those expecting a child can receive the care they need without putting their employment at risk.
