New York minimum wage in 2025: new amount and when it goes into effect
Plenty of states are increasing their minimum wage next year and New York is no exception.
New York is set to raise its minimum wage in 2025, continuing its trend of providing workers with one of the highest wage floors in the United States. The increase, which will take effect on January 1, 2025, varies depending on the region within the state.
For New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County, the minimum wage will rise to $16.50 per hour, a $0.50 increase from the 2024 rate. In the rest of New York State, the minimum wage will increase to $15.50 per hour, also a $0.50 bump from this year.
This increase is part of a multi-year plan to boost the state’s minimum wage and eventually index it to inflation. The plan, agreed upon by Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, aims to maintain the purchasing power of workers’ wages over time.

There are different minimum wage rates for certain industries. For instance, the hospitality industry has a separate tipped minimum wage schedule for food service workers. Additionally, home care aides will see their minimum wage increase to $18.55 per hour in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester County, and $17.55 per hour in the rest of the state.
For the coming year, more than 20 states have increases scheduled for Jan. 1: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, South Dakota, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
Future increases to come in New York
In 2026, another $0.50 increase is scheduled, bringing the minimum wage to $17.00 per hour in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester County, and $16.00 per hour in the rest of the state.
Starting in 2027, the minimum wage will be indexed to inflation, with annual increases based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for the Northeast region.
