National Heather Day: The reason why this name has its own date on Dec. 3 and how to celebrate

National Heather Day is a grassroots holiday that got its start a few years back thanks to a song and a viral TikTok movement.

Update:

According to Days of the Year, December third is a day for a number of celebrations and awareness campaigns. One of those is relatively new, National Heather Day.

Starting back in 2020, the grassroots holiday began thanks to the song ‘Heather’ by Conan Gray and a viral TikTok campaign based on the opening lyrics of the song:

“I still remember the third of December, me in your sweater

You said it looked better on me than it did you”

How to celebrate National Heather Day

Depending on how old you are, there may be a good chance that you know a Heather. The name peaked in popularity in the mid-1970s, coming in third with more than 24,000 baby girls given the name in 1975. However, by 2021 it had fallen to 1309th place of the most popular name for girls with just 171 new Heathers born.

So obviously, if you know someone named Heather, National Heather Day on December third is a great excuse for giving them a special day or at least a gift, like a heather plant, to let them know you care about them.

The opening lyrics of Gray’s song not only fixed the date, but also one of the other ways to celebrate National Heather Day, exchanging sweaters. Get together with a romantic partner, friend, or friends and swap sweaters.

You can also listen to the song ‘Heather’ as well as the rest of Gray’s music. Or if you are into “classic” movies, look for the 1988 black comedy crime film ‘Heathers’ starring Christian Slater and Winona Rider.
