Certain Californian beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - better known by its acronym SNAP - are today due to get their monthly payment for May 2026.
A U.S.-wide food-stamps scheme that benefited around 5.5 million Californians per month in 2024/25, SNAP is a federal program - but the distribution of funds is managed at state level.
In the Golden State, SNAP is run by the California Department of Social Services, under the name CalFresh.
Who is receiving CalFresh benefits this week, May 4-10?
In California, SNAP beneficiaries are typically issued their monthly money between the 1st and 10th of the month, depending on their CalFresh case number.
On Monday, May 4, CalFresh benefits are to be sent out to recipients whose CalFresh case number ends in 4. The CalFresh benefits pay cycle for May will end on Sunday, May 10, when CalFresh benefits are to be sent out to recipients whose CalFresh case number ends in 10.

Maximum monthly CalFresh amounts depend on how many people live in a claimant’s household.

Note that onJune 1, 2026, the U.S. federal government’s rules on CalFresh work and community engagement requirements are changing in California.
How are CalFresh benefits paid?
Monthly payments are loaded onto the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, a debit card that can be used to purchase groceries at participating stores.
What can you buy with an EBT card?
According to the USDA, EBT cards can be used at any location that accepts SNAP benefits to purchase household food items, including:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meat, poultry, and fish
- Dairy products
- Bread and cereals
- Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
- Seeds and plants that produce food for the household
However, SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy:
- Alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, liquor)
- Tobacco products
- Vitamins, medicines, and supplements
- Live animals
- Hot foods sold at the point of sale
- Non-food items (e.g., cleaning supplies, pet food, paper products)
