National S’mores day: All you need to know about the campfire treat and who invented the tasty snack
Discover the history of s’mores, how to make the perfect treat and fun twists to try this National S’mores Day.

Such is the importance of s’mores in North American culture, the tasty treats even have their own special day on the calendar. National S’mores Day is celebrated on August 10 every year, which means this Sunday gives you the perfect excuse to go to town on the campfire favorites.
S’mores, just in case you didn’t know, are made up of a roasted marshmallow with a layer of chocolate bar sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.
The origin of s’mores
That much is clear, but there is some debate about their origin.
Without much in the way of evidence, entrepreneur Alec Barnum is credited by some to have been the man responsible for creating s’mores in the 1800s, although the first recorded version of the recipe dates back to 1927 and the publication of “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.”
In earlier Girl Scout reports from 1925, they referenced “Some Mores,” which we now know later became abbreviated to “s’mores.” Again, the origin of the name is self-explanatory.
Twists on classic s’mores
In addition to classic s’mores, plenty of people like to mix things up.
Some swap chocolate for peanut butter cups or white chocolate, while others use cookies, waffles or pretzels instead of graham crackers for a different crunch. Adding a smear of peanut butter or Nutella is another tasty twist.
Whether you’re making them around a campfire, in the oven or even in the microwave when you’re craving something quick, s’mores are all about having fun and making the perfect gooey treat your own way.
