On Saturday, the United States will celebrate National Waffle Day as it does every year on Aug. 24. Unlike some fun food holidays, however, there’s a historical reason for marking this particular date.
It commemorates the day in 1869 when Cornelius Swartwout was awarded the first U.S. patent for the waffle iron, which made it much easier to cook the breakfast favorite.

Smoothie chain Jamba is celebrating National Waffle Day on Saturday with weekend deals offering twice as many points for customers. From Aug. 23 to Aug. 25, customers who order a waffle bowl will receive double points. These can be accrued and used on subsequent purchases for discounts and even freebies.

For those in Chicago, Fry the Coop celebrates National Waffle Day on Aug. 24 with in-store only Swaffles for just $5, limited to two per person. The deal is available at all store locations.
Swaffles are for those who love the sweet-salty combo of chicken and waffles. Fry the Coop’s version is a double beef-fat-fried chicken breast served inside half a waffle as the bun.
